Edusphere meets Blogosphere: Weblogs in Higher Education – Citation Cartel or Discourse Revolution?

Abstract: This paper deals with the topic “edublogging”, the use of weblogs in education, and focuses on the tertiary sector.  In many higher education institutions, edublogs are not only a tool for teaching, but also a discussion platform for educational research and practice as well as a medium for public relations and customer support for IT divisions, libraries and student offices. In addition, several universities offer multiblogs that staff and students to create their own Web presence with just a few clicks. Accordingly, it is difficult to paint a congruent yet comprehensive picture of the edublogosphere. The article examines the phenomenon through an extensive literature review, web searches, content analysis and personal, qualitative interviews. The aim is to map the manifold landscape of German edublogs. As a result, the article presents blogging strategies of e-learning facilities, e-learning researchers and multiblogs in higher education.
